Chiropractic Care

Most people think that chiropractors are bone doctors, but that is only half true! Chiropractic is actually more focused on the nervous system.  When bones of the spine misalign due to stress, trauma, or chronic misuse, the spinal bones place pressure on the nerves above and below that bone. These nerves go out into the body and control all bodily functions such as hand and arm movement, sensation, and even organ function.  When the bones of the spinal column put pressure on these nerves, patients can have many symptoms including pain, numbness, tingling, muscle soreness, and weakness.

This nerve pressure can be corrected by chiropractic adjustments.  Chiropractic adjustments are gentle spinal manipulations that correct the spinal misalignments and allow maximal space for the nerve to function.  Chiropractors can also adjust joints in the arms and legs to restore full range of motion and relieve discomfort.

Therapeutic Exercises

When people are having aches and pain, it is usually do to the fact that structures are not moving properly and certain muscles are not stabilizing the body correctly.  Initially, therapeutic exercises are designed to help restore full range of motion to the structures of the body.  Once motion is restored, therapeutic exercises are geared towards increasing the body’s ability to stabilize itself.  Pressure is taken off spine and other joints by allowing the muscles of the body to stabilize and absorb the pressure.  The ultimate goal of therapeutic exercises is to help maintain the corrections made through chiropractic care.

Prenatal Adjustments

Along with the many beautiful experiences that come with pregnancy, unfortunately some women experience severe back pain and other types of discomfort.  Most commonly, pregnant women complain of low back and or sciatic type symptoms.  Luckily for these women this pain can be eliminated or minimized by gentle chiropractic adjustments. There are two causes of the low back pain in these pregnant women.  The first cause of low back pain in pregnant women is a hormone called relaxin.  Relaxin is a hormone that helps the ligaments in the low back and pelvis relax during the duration of pregnancy.  Since the ligaments are in a relaxed state it allows the bones of the pelvis and spine to easily move out of alignment resulting in the pinching of very sensitive nerves.  The second cause of low back pain in pregnant women is the change of pressure on the spine due to a shift of the center of gravity of the body.  As the baby grows in the mother’s womb it causes her center of gravity to move forward.  This change in the center of gravity places more pressure on the bones of the low back therefore creating more pressure on the nerves of the low back.  Once again gentle chiropractic adjustments can relieve the discomfort associated with this change in the center of gravity in pregnant women.
